Perfumer
Josh Meyer, a self-taught perfumer from Portland, founded Imaginary Authors. Each of his perfumes has the title of a novel that doesn’t exist and an invented author, and a short blurb comes with the bottle. His perfumes are mostly woody and aromatic.
In 2010 he started mixing scents in his basement in Portland, Oregon, and two years later he founded Imaginary Authors with creative director Ashod Simonian. He has also made perfumes for other American brands. He’s known for Memoirs of a Trespasser and Yesterday Haze.
For each perfume Meyer first pictures a scene, such as a storm at sea or ice cream on the beach. Cape Heartache smells of pine forest and strawberries on the Pacific coast. He often pairs scents you rarely find together. His perfumes don’t smell like classic European perfumes, and that’s deliberate.
