Intenso di Nero

Carthusia Intenso di Nero starts where the light on the island runs out. Nero is black, and the name is literal here. The perfume opens sweet and almost edible, and then it closes up and goes dark. It is dry and resinous, but something soft underneath keeps it warm. Around it is the kind of darkness that only exists far from a city, thick and full of smells you never notice by day. On Capri that darkness is as much part of ordinary life as the sun is. It is never complete either, because a little light always turns up somewhere inside it. It smells like the moment the last boat leaves and the island is left to itself. Nothing is happening. The lanes are empty, the stone is cooling off, and the gardens smell stronger after dark than they do all day long. A moment like that lasts a long time and nobody notices it. Window lights go out one by one, a dog answers somewhere, and the island stays dark until morning. Intenso di Nero smells like exactly that darkness.
