Perfumer
David-Lev Jipa-Slivinschi, from Bucharest, founded his own house, Toskovat’, and each of his perfumes starts from an idea or a memory. For the Romanian house Caeleste he made Principalities, a smoky, spicy extrait.
He was a screenwriter until, at 24 and in the middle of the pandemic, he started teaching himself perfumery. In 2022 he launched Toskovat’, a name from Slavic roots that means a deep yearning. He’d rather call himself a perfume-maker than a perfumer, because the title comes with expectations he has no interest in. The perfume people talk about most is Inexcusable Evil, which smells of blood, bandages and burning flowers. Dazed magazine wrote about it.
He picks unusual themes. One of his perfumes is a Christmas critique of capitalism. Principalities for Caeleste is inspired by the angelic rulers, which he imagined as powerful beings rather than decoration. It’s warm and spicy, and it also smells of stone after rain.
