In an exclusive interview with Pierre Guguen, the founder of L’Orchestre Parfum, we bring you the story of how music shaped his fragrant expression and how these two worlds—sound and scent—merged into a singular artistic vision. Pierre reveals what drives his creative process, the emotions he strives to convey through his fragrances, and what the future holds for the brand.
Pierre, could you tell us about your journey into the world of perfumes? What sparked your passion and ultimately led to the creation of L’Orchestre Parfum?
I have always been fascinated by scent – an invisible, delicate substance, yet charged with such profound emotions. During my studies, I had the opportunity to explore the world of fragrance creation through various internships. Later, I had the privilege of starting my career in Barcelona with a brand renowned for its unique fragrances: Comme des Garçons. There, I learned the art of scent development alongside some of the world’s most talented perfumers and designers.
Your brand is known for fusing scent and music in a truly unique way. How did this idea come to life, and what does this connection between scent and sound mean to you personally?
By day, I was creating fragrances, and by night, I slung a guitar over my shoulder to play with a band I founded in Barcelona. Living these two lives side by side, they naturally began to intertwine. I had a strong intuition: “What if we brought a scent onto the stage and experienced it live, alongside our music?”
A perfumer friend helped me design a fragrance for one of our songs, which we then performed and sprayed live during a concert. The reaction was immediate and unanimous – it was as if the emotional intensity of the live performance was amplified by the presence of the scent. I believe that music and perfume follow the same physical principles: they are born from the heart of the artist, live fleetingly in the air, and possess the power to move us to tears.
When developing a new fragrance, what does your creative process look like? Where do you draw inspiration from memories, travels, music, or something else?
I always start with a moment I have truly lived, whether during a journey or a concert, where music and scent were so intimately intertwined that the memory became unforgettable. It is essential for me to base a creation on something authentic. That authenticity is what creates a meaningful connection with the perfumer, and later, with the musician. Without it, the fragrance doesn’t “sound” right; fragrance lovers can sense whether a scent “sounds” good or not.
How would you describe your personal fragrance philosophy? What emotions or experiences do you hope to evoke through L’Orchestre Parfum?
I believe our sense of smell is profoundly underestimated. Smelling with intention is, for me, a deeply moving inner journey that is accessible to everyone. This experience has brought me and continues to bring me so many emotions. Through L’Orchestre Parfum, I want to offer a unique journey, a smile, a moment suspended in time.
Which L’Orchestre Parfum fragrance holds a special place in your heart, and what makes it so significant?
Piano Santal. It is like a protective veil. A comforting, milky, woody embrace that I never grow tired of. I sincerely thank Jean Jacques and Edouard Ferlet for bringing it to life.
The world of niche perfumery is changing rapidly. How does L’Orchestre manage to preserve its artistic roots while standing out in such a dynamic environment?
Our multisensory creations will always speak for themselves. I truly believe that our strength lies precisely in those artistic roots. After seven years in the world of independent perfumery, I am convinced that the trust and creative bonds we have built with our artists and partners allow us to look to the future with confidence and joy.
Are there any upcoming launches or collaborations you can share with us? What can customers expect from L’Orchestre in the near future?
We are thrilled to launch a new chapter this September, inspired by the hypnotic, contagious universe of electronic music: Bouquet Encore. We cannot wait to share it with you.
If you could describe L’Orchestre Parfum in three words, what would they be?
Trust. Freedom. Passion.
Thank you for being part of the L’Orchestre symphony of scents!
