Perfumer
Joschka Klee is a self-taught German perfumer from Aachen. In 2023 he founded his own house, vapormundum, and for twentysecondofmay he made Roots of Kente, a gourmand perfume about ancestors and heritage.
As a child he smelled everything, even the food his mother put on the table. As a young man he collected perfume and spent his nights reading blogs and reviews, and meeting an amateur perfumer pushed him to make his own. He mixed his first materials in his parents’ boiler room and now works in his own studio. For L’Art Vévien he made The Architect of Chaos, a perfume based on a painting.
He buys his materials from small producers around the world. He makes the building blocks of each perfume himself instead of buying them ready-made. He keeps adding to his collection, smoky resins and oud above all. He links his perfumes to music, painting and poetry, and each one starts from an idea, a feeling or a story. He doesn’t think he smells better than other people. The nose, he says, is a muscle you can train. He also says a perfume for his own house never feels quite finished. Roots of Kente has brown sugar, cocoa and coconut milk.
