Perfumer
Boris Barzut lives in London, where he works as both a chef and a perfumer. For Jijide he made Fuoco, a perfume that smells of cigarette smoke and roasted chestnuts.
He was born in Bosnia, into a traditional Bosnian family, and moved to England when his family fled the war. Fuoco is the first perfume he has made for a perfume house. It belongs to Jijide’s Dialogue collection, in which two perfumers from different cultures each make one of a pair of perfumes on a shared theme. His friend Adill Ali, who made Terra for Jijide, talked him into taking part.
As a chef he was drawn to flavours and their nuances, and over time that interest spread to perfume. When he discovered niche perfumery, he started buying ingredients and taught himself by trying them out. He has his own lab at home. Fuoco grew out of the memory of an embrace and the smell of smoke on his father’s jacket. His father loved tobacco and strong masculine fragrances. Jijide calls Fuoco a perfume about belonging and human warmth. It smells of the Balkans, of cigarettes among friends and chestnuts roasting on the street, and there is tobacco alongside the smoke.
