Perfumer
Adill Ali was born in London and now lives in Dubai. He founded his own perfume house, Hunayn, and for Jijide he made Terra, a perfume about the African sunset.
He travelled a lot with his family, which Jijide says made him a natural nomad. At seven he moved to Kenya, where he had the experiences that later inspired Terra. He first expressed his creativity through photography, then through poetry. As a teenager he discovered perfume and slowly realised it was his calling. Jijide met him at Esxence in Milan in 2023, when he offered to sell them some of his ingredients, a very special oud among them. They invited him into the Dialogue collection, in which two perfumers from different cultures each make one of a pair of perfumes on a shared theme. Terra’s partner is Fuoco, made by his friend Boris Barzut.
Jijide describes his approach to perfumery as unconventional and emotional, and says he keeps experimenting to refine it. Of all the ingredients he works with, he loves oud most. Terra smells of the moment the sun goes down in Kenya, when the heat eases and the cool of the evening brings back the wish to be with other people. It has Kenyan spices, leather and oud.
