Intenso di Sandalo

Carthusia Intenso di Sandalo is about time, and about how much of it something needs before it is worth anything. This is a perfume whose sandalwood is neither heavy nor saturated. It is creamy and soft, but it sits on dry ground, on stone that has been soaking up the sun all afternoon. Around it is Mediterranean light, the kind that dries the scrub along the coast and carries salt in off the water. On Capri nature stayed part of ordinary life, and the island is still remembered for the way it smells. The scrub grows straight out of the rock and salt is in the air all year. It smells like warm wood under a Mediterranean sun, in the moment the heat lets go and the island goes still. Nothing is happening. People have tucked themselves into the shade, the sea is flat, and the stone is still giving back the warmth it gathered all day. A moment like that is short and everyone knows when it comes. The shade crosses the square, somebody opens a window, and only then does the island slowly come back to life. Intenso di Sandalo smells like exactly that moment.
