Imaginary Authors Slow Explosions – in 1980, Gwen K. Vroomen quit her monotonous job in Dearborn, Michigan, walked into a local bar and, at the bartender’s urging, threw a dart at a world map on the wall. She had never heard of Goa in India, but she immediately knew she had to go there. Three months later she was celebrating Hindu New Year in a tea garden high in the hills of Kerala, watching fireworks erupt beneath her. She wrote of that night: “The colors brought me to life, the vibrating unknown delivered me.” Her journey out of darkness, filled with unforgettable tales of night markets, river drifts and thrilling moped rides, became an inspiration for a generation of young Americans longing to escape the greyness of everyday life.
