Saint Julep

Imaginary Authors Saint Julep – on the edge of Clarksdale in Mississippi, at the end of a lonely dirt road, stood a small dilapidated church. It was not a place of worship, but a sanctuary for those in hard times. According to legend, about twenty men carried that building to the wild mint field by hand on their shoulders. Modest on the outside, but inside illuminated by stolen neon signs, Christmas lights and a jukebox donated by the sheriff’s son, it was a secular place for community – where locals shared homemade liquor, socialized and danced away their worries. They called it Saint Julep, and the stories and memories written there evoke the magic of that place where smiles were free, and salvation had an unusually sweet minty scent.
