In conversation with Tomas Ric, the founder and creative spirit behind Pigmentarium, we discover how a passion for scent and art gave rise to one of Central Europe’s most captivating niche perfume stories. From his very first perfume purchase to fragrant compositions inspired by films, churches, summers by the river, and the Czech avant-garde, Pigmentarium is much more than a fragrance. It is an attitude, a sensibility, and an invitation to personal freedom. Read on to find out what Tomas revealed to us about his beginnings, his inspirations, and what still lies ahead.
Tomáš, could you take us back to the very beginning – what moment or experience inspired you to create the Pigmentarium brand? Was there a specific story behind launching your own brand?
It started around 2016 with a profound passion for fragrances, a fascination with their emotional power, and the creative freedom they offered. I was always drawn to scent’s ability to capture a memory, to act almost as an invisible architecture. At the same time, I had immense respect for Prague’s independent art scene—raw, unpolished, and beautifully honest. Pigmentarium began as a tribute to the city I love most. Looking back, I didn’t know much, but I was absolutely convinced we could create something meaningful.
What first drew you to the world of fragrances? Was there a specific scent or memory that sparked your deep passion for perfumery?
The first perfume I bought for myself was Black Afgano by Nasomatto – like many others, as I later discovered. It was a revelation. The way it embraced me, the way it made me feel seen, different, even a bit untouchable; that moment shaped my understanding of fragrance. It wasn’t just about smelling good: it was about identity, emotion, and freedom. That is the power I want our fragrances to have. To help people feel like their best, truest selves – extraordinary in their own way.
When you think of fragrance as an art form, how do you approach it? How do you want people to feel or experience Pigmentarium scents on a personal level?
Exactly as I just described – I want people to feel like their best selves. Confident, curious, quietly powerful. To me, a fragrance is a wearable piece of art. It should make you feel something before you even fully comprehend it.
Inspiration can come from anywhere. Is there a place, an emotion, or even a piece of art that frequently influences your creative process when developing a new perfume?
Always Prague: its architecture, its contradictions, its cultural memory. But also specific stories. Erotikon, our gourmand scent, is inspired by the 1929 Czech silent film of the same name. Paradiso represents a summer by the river – citrusy and slightly rebellious, like a grapefruit cocktail in the heat. And Oratorio was born from the feeling of walking into a cold Baroque church: stone, incense, warmth, and silence.
Is there a specific fragrance from the Pigmentarium collection that you feel especially connected to? What is the story behind it, and why does it mean so much to you?
I try not to pick favorites, but right now, it is Brutal. It is a daring blend: tuberose, jasmine, and ylang-ylang on one side, softened, and then supported by notes of tobacco, coffee, and bitter negroni. It is floral, but not in a classical sense. On a man, it is intensely confident. On a woman, it is magnetic. I love how it shatters expectations.
Collaborating with artists on ‘limited’ editions adds a distinctive and personal dimension. Could you share how this idea came about and what it represents for the brand?
I have always loved working on limited editions; they allow us to invite artists into our world and let them interpret the perfume through their own lens. We usually collaborate with creators from Prague, offering our fragrance as a blank canvas. One of our core values is supporting Czech culture – past and present – and this is a way to bring it into dialogue with a global audience.
How would you describe Pigmentarium’s unique identity in today’s niche perfume world, and what is your personal approach to maintaining the brand’s authenticity and relevance?
Pigmentarium is raw. When I started, I didn’t follow rules or proven strategies; I just built what felt honest. And I think that sense of unpolished conviction still permeates everything we do. There is a kind of quiet rebellion in our identity, rooted in the artistic spirit of Prague, yet speaking to people everywhere who appreciate something different.
Could you share any hints about upcoming releases? Are there new ideas or directions you wish to explore with the brand?
We usually don’t reveal too much in advance – I believe in giving each release its own space and moment – but I can share this: our next project is about home. Not just a place, but the feeling of intimacy, grounding, and connection. It is something we are all searching for, and I think it will resonate deeply.
Thank you for stepping into the world of Pigmentarium with us.
